Music’s Influence to the Soul

“Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord” Ephesians 5:19 A familiar cliché says, “The eye is the window to one’s soul” and who does not agree? On the other hand, it is music that determines the soul. Our eyes can sometimes neglect what is inside of the heart and be pretentious in the physical realm as the Mighty one said it is the word that goes out from the mouth which defiles the person than of what goes inside of the body. Music is part of everyone’s life. From the day a person begins to breath in this world. The cry of the baby just as he exits the very womb of the mother plays a beautiful and significant sounds that brings undeniable joy to both parents. As we learn the sound of the alphabets, reading, writing and the acquisition of language, music is intertwined. As we start to enjoy our freewill, we ought to choose our taste of music along with all of our inclinations. Moreover, there are three different types of music. Firstly, is the worldly music, these kind of music is categorized as music which lyrics and melody is offered for the world’s pleasure. Most likely these music is all about affairs of this world that opted to fill the fleshly and mortal desires of the body. There are some examples such as the “Versace “by Bruno Mars released in 2016 and Beautiful Girls by Sean Kingston boomed in 2009. There is nothing bad about the singers but I am after the lyrics of the song. Versace means clothes or dress not anymore necessary to wear and must be taken off. The lyrics are very sensual that invites sexual desires. The latter was such a hit that even I myself was engrossed with the song because of its jolly melody. As the song played in the radio and even school programs, I was in the middle of a last song syndrome until I memorized it. Hence some says the lyrics was a bit demonic that it leads to suicidal of some. Secondly is the secular music, these are songs which lyrics are categorized as non-religious, rather controlled by the government, rather than by the church. For instance, songs like National Anthem, School Hymn, Weddings etc. This kinds of songs are frozen in lyrics and the melody which cannot be altered through the ages. And the last category is Christian music centered on the Spirit that aims straightly in praising and honoring the one who invented music—God. Songs that contain biblical words examples of which are Hallelujah, worship, praise, glory, honor to God etc. The Lord who created everything, must be praised by all His creations. Everyone should use music in honoring God. In addition, pastor Rick Warren in His book, Purpose Driven Life tells us that the purpose of music is to worship the creator of life. Through Spiritual songs and worship our soul can find amazing fulfillment, deep sense and meaning. God directs this generation to worship Him in Spirit and in truth, “Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness”. Definitive our choices of music are the reflection of our soul and our intimacy and relationship with our Creator, the inventor of music, “everything started in Him and finds its purpose in Him”. Singing good songs like Christian songs refuels our everlasting life to eternity. Music is a powerful weapon which could inspire us, encourage us, fill us with hope, love and invigorates our lives. However, music can also drown us in our illusions, imaginations of alluring beauty, fears, depression and painful memories. Whether it kills or it breathes, so we have to think twice. One thing is for sure God invented music to give us all fulfilled and happy life.
